The Importance of Inclusive Playgrounds

Our Mission

The Cindy Mills Adaptive Fund dedicates its funds to building an inclusive playground for families with disabilities. The funds are derived from fundraisers, donations, and events hosted by the CMAF team as a way to add more inclusion in the world. This inclusive playground, when fully fundraised for, would be placed somewhere in Whitehall Township. See the image below for a 2D diagram of the playground in mind.

Accessibility Importance

Activity is an extremely important part of being a kid. Getting outside and playing on a playground is a childhood memory every kid should have to remember. Playgrounds exist everywhere, but inclusive playgrounds with major accessibility points are not everywhere. Accessibility creates the idea of a playground becoming inclusive. As shown in the image above, this playground includes activities where kids who use a mobility device can be included. This playground’s ground will have a unique surface where mobility devices can move more easily along the ground. There are also ramps and sensory-friendly elements to ensure all kids can play on this playground

Physical and Accessibility Importance

There are so many benefits both physical and accessibility-wise. This playground will provide kids with physical activity. It is recommended that kids get 60 minutes of exercise a day. Kids of all abilities and ages can move around freely to satisfy that exercise goal each day. This playground will also create an inclusive environment for families and kids of all different abilities to communicate, exercise, and enjoy the inclusive playground. This space for exercise will allow for social inclusion with kids to talk to other kids with different abilities to feel welcomed in a community. A goal of this playground is to bring all families together and make these children feel confident in themselves.
